University of Scarborough - SAMIH Facility
The UTSC Scarborough Academy of Medicine & Integrated Health (SAMIH) is a major Design Build project being delivered with EllisDon that will serve as a new centre for healthcare education, research, and community-focused learning at the University of Toronto Scarborough.
Designed to support the next generation of healthcare professionals, the facility will provide a modern environment for undergraduate education and professional training while strengthening access to healthcare resources within the Scarborough community. The building incorporates a range of specialized spaces, including teaching laboratories, academic and administrative offices, live MRI facilities, and EEG rooms, creating an integrated setting for hands-on learning, collaboration, and innovation in healthcare education.
SERVICES
Plan Group is delivering the project’s electrical, mechanical, and technology systems as part of the Design Build team. A strong focus on early collaboration between the project team, consultants, suppliers, and trade partners has supported design development and constructability planning from the outset. Through value engineering initiatives, the team has optimized system performance, improved efficiency, and identified cost-effective solutions while maintaining the project’s design objectives.
Key project innovations include the fabrication and modularization of major components such as pump skids, boiler skids, prefabricated pipe racks, insulation systems, and controls assemblies to improve installation efficiency and quality. Additional planning efforts include hanger optimization strategies, detailed tool management protocols, proactive scheduling to reduce labour spikes, and the use of 4D modelling for mechanical room coordination and construction sequencing. The project is scheduled for completion in July 2026 and represents a significant investment in healthcare education infrastructure for the Scarborough community.
